Google is officially retiring Google Assistant from Android phones and tablets, marking the end of the voice assistant that has been a core part of Android for years.
Beginning September 4, 2026, users will gradually lose access to Google Assistant, with Google replacing it entirely with Gemini on supported devices.
According to an email sent to users, the rollout will begin on September 4 and may take several weeks to reach everyone. Once Google Assistant is removed, users will no longer be able to switch back to it on their Android phones, tablets, or paired devices.
For users in regions where Gemini is available and whose devices meet the required hardware and software requirements, Gemini will become the only built-in assistant. This change also affects connected devices such as Wear OS smartwatches, wireless headphones, earbuds, and vehicles running Android Auto, all of which will lose Google Assistant support.
However, Google says the change does not yet apply to every platform. Cars with Google built-in will continue using Google Assistant for now, while Google Home smart speakers and Google TV devices will also keep Assistant beyond the September shutdown.
