France has carried out a raid on X’s offices in Paris as part of a criminal investigation linked to the platform’s Grok AI tool.
French prosecutors confirmed that the search took place on Tuesday and is connected to concerns over the generation and spread of illegal content on the platform, including sexually explicit images.
The investigation was originally opened in January 2025 and was later expanded following multiple complaints. Authorities are examining claims that Grok was used to generate illegal material and that X has been used to share sexual deepfakes and content denying the Holocaust. Officers from the National Gendarmerie’s cybercrime unit led the raid, with support from officials at Europol.
The Paris prosecutor’s office also announced that Elon Musk and X chief executive Linda Yaccarino have been summoned for voluntary interviews scheduled for April 20. Additional X employees are expected to be questioned as witnesses between April 20 and April 24 as part of the same probe.
According to Europol, the investigation covers a broad range of suspected criminal offenses connected to how the platform operates and how it is used. These include the spread of illegal content and other forms of online criminal activity. Paris public prosecutor Laure Beccuau said the interviews would allow X executives to explain their position and outline any compliance measures they plan to take.
She added that the goal of the investigation is to ensure that X complies with French law while operating in the country.
