Dell has confirmed that its SupportAssist software is causing blue-screen crashes on some Windows systems after users began reporting random reboots on Dell devices since Friday.
SupportAssist is Dell’s software suite that comes pre-installed on many new Windows 10 and Windows 11 computers. The tool is designed to help with system diagnostics, updates, and recovery, but a recent update appears to be creating serious problems for some users.
A Dell representative said on the company’s official forums that the latest SupportAssist Remediation service update is responsible for triggering 0xEF_DellSupportAss_BUGCHECK_CRITICAL_PROCESS errors. Dell advised affected users to remove the service as a temporary workaround while its engineering team works on a fix.
According to Dell, version 5.5.16.0 of the Dell SupportAssist Remediation service, as well as the Alienware SupportAssist Remediation service, can cause blue-screen crashes. The company said many users have been able to stop the crashes by disabling the service or fully uninstalling the SupportAssist app.
Users who want to remove the faulty version can open Windows Settings, go to Apps, then Installed apps, find “Alienware SupportAssist Remediation,” and select Uninstall. However, Dell warned that repair points created by Dell OS SupportAssist Recovery may no longer be available after the service is removed.
Dell also advised users who continue to face blue-screen crashes after uninstalling the service to contact its support team for further help.
This is not the first time Dell software updates have caused problems for customers. In April 2025, Dell warned that some Latitude and Vostro laptop users could experience blue-screen errors after upgrading to SupportAssist for Home PCs version 4.6.2 or 4.6.3.
In December 2021, users also reported that some Dell BIOS updates were preventing several laptop and desktop models from booting properly. Affected devices reportedly powered on, showed a blue screen, and then shut down again. Some users later shared steps to downgrade the BIOS using SupportAssist OS Recovery.
Dell’s SupportAssist software has also faced security concerns in the past. Researchers previously found serious vulnerabilities in its BIOSConnect feature that could allow remote attackers to execute code within the BIOS of affected devices.
