Blackmagic Design is pushing DaVinci Resolve beyond video editing with its latest update, introducing a range of new photo-editing tools.
With version 21, the software is positioning itself as a serious alternative to apps like Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop, while also adding features designed to compete with Premiere. Among the updates are AI tools that can alter a person’s appearance in videos, making them look older or younger by adjusting facial details like wrinkles and shape.
A new photo mode sits at the center of this update, giving users the ability to organize, rate, and label large collections of images more easily. It also includes an AI-powered search feature that helps locate specific subjects or content quickly. The same color correction and masking tools that Resolve is known for in video editing can now be applied to still images, along with options for cropping, reducing noise, sharpening details, and using Film Looks presets to speed up editing.
The software supports common formats like JPEG and HEIC, along with RAW files from major camera brands, including Sony, Canon, Nikon, and Fujifilm. This makes it more appealing for photographers working with high-quality image files. The new version is currently available as a free beta across macOS, Windows, and Linux.
Additional updates focus on improving workflow. Users can import images directly from Apple Photos or Adobe Lightroom catalogs, and collaborate with others using Blackmagic Cloud syncing. Tasks can be handled faster with GPU-accelerated batch exports and conversions, taking advantage of powerful graphics hardware. Resolve 21 also adds support for controlling tethered Sony and Canon cameras, offering a live preview and the ability to adjust settings like ISO, exposure, and white balance directly from the app.
