Chinese state media have raised security concerns about Nvidia’s H20 artificial intelligence chips designed for the Chinese market.
A social media account affiliated with state broadcaster CCTV, Yuyuan Tantian, claimed the chips could have hardware “backdoors” enabling remote shutdowns and criticized them for lacking technological advancement and environmental friendliness.
This follows a July 31 meeting where China’s cyberspace watchdog summoned Nvidia to investigate possible backdoor security risks in the chips. Nvidia has denied any backdoors or hidden access in its products.
The H20 chips were developed in response to U.S. export restrictions on advanced AI chips imposed in late 2023. Though the Trump administration banned sales of these chips in April 2025 amid trade tensions, the ban was lifted in July. Earlier this month, People’s Daily, another Chinese state media outlet, called on Nvidia to provide “convincing security proofs” to reassure Chinese users and regain trust.
Nvidia did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
