China has reclaimed the top position in the global TOP500 supercomputer rankings after its LineShine system became the world’s fastest supercomputer.

The achievement marks China’s first appearance on the prestigious list in three years and highlights the country’s advances in high-performance computing using domestically developed processors.

The LineShine supercomputer, located at the National Supercomputing Centre in Shenzhen, surpassed the U.S.-based El Capitan system, which is housed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. El Capitan had previously held the number one position on the biannual ranking of the world’s most powerful supercomputers.

The latest ranking comes amid increasing competition between China and the United States in advanced computing technologies. China had stopped submitting systems to the TOP500 rankings in 2023 following years of U.S. export restrictions on advanced chips and computing technologies.

TOP500 rankings are based on benchmark tests designed to measure the performance of supercomputers in handling complex scientific and engineering workloads. These systems are commonly used for research involving climate modeling, physics simulations, materials science, and other large-scale computational tasks.

LineShine’s first-place finish is significant because the system is powered by chips designed in China, reflecting the country’s efforts to strengthen its domestic computing industry. The return of a Chinese system to the top of the rankings also ends a three-year absence from the list.

According to information released alongside the rankings, LineShine achieved the highest performance score among all systems tested, securing its place as the world’s fastest-ranked supercomputer in the June 2026 edition of the TOP500 list.
