OpenAI is preparing to introduce advertising inside ChatGPT, beginning with sponsored shopping links that appear alongside conversations.

The company says the ads will roll out in the coming weeks as a test for logged-in users in the United States who are on the free tier or the newly launched ChatGPT Go plan.

According to OpenAI, ads will be clearly labeled and displayed in a dedicated section at the bottom of the chat, separate from ChatGPT’s responses. The company emphasizes that advertisers will not influence how ChatGPT answers questions and that responses will continue to be optimized solely for usefulness.

OpenAI says it will not sell user data to advertisers and will keep conversations private. Users will have controls to dismiss ads, turn off ad personalization, clear ad-related data, and submit feedback. Ads will not be shown to users under 18 — or users OpenAI believes may be under 18 — and will be excluded from sensitive or regulated topics such as health, mental health, and politics.

Paid subscribers on ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Enterprise plans will not see ads. However, the lower-cost $8-per-month ChatGPT Go tier, which is expanding in the US, will include advertising as part of the experience.

OpenAI has previously signaled that ads were coming. ChatGPT head Nick Turley said last year that any advertising integration would be “thoughtful and tasteful.” The company briefly tested in-app promotions in December but reversed the change after user backlash. This time, OpenAI says ads are being introduced to help support broader access to ChatGPT while reducing usage limits for free and lower-tier users.
