OpenAI’s ChatGPT has crossed 1 billion global monthly active app users, making it the fastest app ever to reach the milestone, according to estimates from market intelligence firm Sensor Tower.
The achievement comes as competition between OpenAI and Anthropic continues to grow in the fast-expanding artificial intelligence market. Sensor Tower said ChatGPT reached 1 billion monthly active users in May, around three years after its launch. That pace is faster than major apps such as Google Maps, TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube.
The firm also said that U.S. ChatGPT users who installed Anthropic’s Claude app in the first quarter of 2026 spent 5% less time on ChatGPT one month after installing Claude, compared with their average usage during the previous eight months.
Anthropic confidentially filed for a U.S. initial public offering on Monday, while Reuters has reported that OpenAI is also preparing to file for an IPO in the coming weeks.
According to Sensor Tower, Claude had 56 million global monthly active app users as of the second quarter to date. Its year-over-year monthly active user growth reached about 640%, far ahead of ChatGPT’s 62% growth during the same period.
