Brave Software has released Brave Origin, a paid version of its browser designed for users who want a cleaner and more privacy-focused browsing experience without extra features such as cryptocurrency tools, AI, rewards, and promotional services.
The company says Brave Origin is made for people who do not need all the built-in features included in the regular Brave browser but still want the privacy protections the browser is known for. The new version removes many of Brave’s optional revenue-focused tools and integrations to offer a more minimalist experience.
According to Brave, Origin disables features such as Brave Rewards, Brave Wallet, Brave VPN promotions, Brave Leo AI, Brave News, Brave Talk, sponsored images, and other promotional or monetization-related parts of the standard browser.
Even with those features removed, Brave Origin still includes Brave Shields, the browser’s built-in privacy and ad-blocking system. This means users will continue to get protection against ads, trackers, and other unwanted web elements.
Brave Origin is available as a separate browser download and also as an upgrade option for people already using Brave. The company says the license costs $59.99 as a one-time purchase and can be used on up to 10 devices. Users who install the Linux version can use Brave Origin for free.
The launch has also sparked criticism from some users. Critics argue that Brave is charging people to remove features that many users already saw as unnecessary in the free version of the browser.
One Reddit user said Brave originally promoted itself as a browser that protected users from the web’s monetization systems, but over time, the browser itself became another monetization layer. The user added that Brave Origin appears to confirm that the clean and stripped-down privacy version is now becoming the paid product.
Some users also noted that many of the removed features can already be disabled in the free Brave browser through enterprise group policies. Because of this, they questioned whether Brave Origin offers any major difference beyond making those settings easier to apply.
Supporters of Brave Origin argue that most users will not manually configure enterprise policies, so the new browser gives them a simpler way to get a cleaner, privacy-focused experience while also supporting Brave’s privacy work.
