Brave Software has announced that its privacy-focused browser will block Microsoft’s Windows Recall feature from capturing screenshots of Brave browser windows by default.

Windows Recall, a new opt-in feature in Windows 11, takes screenshots of active windows every few seconds and uses AI to help users search their past activity. While the feature is designed for convenience, it has drawn criticism for exposing potentially sensitive information, including passwords, emails, financial records, and health data.

In response, Microsoft introduced ways for apps to opt out and enhanced security using Windows Hello’s Enhanced Sign-in Security (ESS). Brave, however, has taken a proactive step by automatically opting out for users.

“Given Brave’s focus on privacy-maximizing defaults and what is at stake here (your entire browsing history), we have proactively disabled Recall for all Brave tabs,” the company said in a blog post.

Brave’s developers implemented Microsoft’s SetInputScope API to set the input scope to IS_PRIVATE across all browser windows. This setting informs Windows that the content should not be indexed or captured by Recall.

The change is already available in Brave Nightly builds and is expected to reach the stable version in the coming weeks. Users who wish to enable Recall can still do so manually via Brave’s settings.
