Bluesky is improving its app experience for users who like sharing photos.

The company announced version 1.121 on Wednesday, introducing better image quality with higher upload limits and sharper photo resolution.

Previously, Bluesky only allowed image uploads up to 1MB. With the latest update, that limit has increased to 2MB. The platform has also doubled maximum photo rendering resolution from 2000px to 4000px, allowing clearer and more detailed images in posts.

Bluesky has also replaced its older image grid layout with a swipeable carousel. The new system supports mixed aspect ratios, meaning photos with different shapes and sizes can be viewed together without being cropped.

Some early user reactions suggest that people would still like the option to choose between the old grid format and the new carousel style.

These updates could help Bluesky compete more directly with platforms like X and Threads.

Threads became popular partly because of its photo-friendly design, offering support for multiple aspect ratios and carousel posts that made large images easier to view. Threads still appears to allow larger image uploads, although its exact limit is not publicly listed.
