OpenAI says it is rolling out a new update for GPT-5.5 Instant, improving the model’s response quality while also preparing to retire several older models, including o3.
GPT-5.5 Instant was first released on April 23 and has improved significantly over the past few weeks, especially in May 2026. In an updated document, OpenAI quietly confirmed that it has enhanced the quality of GPT-5.5, meaning the model should now respond more accurately and with a better overall writing style.
The company is also working to reduce overly long and bullet-heavy answers, making ChatGPT responses feel more natural and easier to read. The goal is to make conversations smoother, especially for everyday users who want clear and practical help without robotic formatting.
OpenAI says GPT-5.5 will now be better paced when handling practical support tasks after this week’s update. This means users should see more balanced answers that are useful without feeling too dense or unnecessarily detailed.
Alongside these improvements, OpenAI is also retiring older legacy models as it shifts focus toward its newer and more capable systems. According to the update, o3 will be retired from ChatGPT on August 26, with users getting a 90-day sunset period. GPT-4.5 will be retired from ChatGPT on June 27 after a 30-day sunset period.
These legacy models are currently available only to paid ChatGPT users. While o3 may not be missed by many users, GPT-4.5 is likely to be missed by some because it felt closer to GPT-4o in tone and personality. That more personal style also made it a controversial model for some users.
OpenAI is also rolling out other improvements to ChatGPT, including a new job search integration. While ChatGPT has already been useful for writing and improving resumes, the new feature is designed to help users find real job opportunities more directly.
With the job search tool, ChatGPT can now show live job listings and freelance opportunities from sources such as Indeed, Upwork, Appcast, and other websites. OpenAI says the results are personalized based on the user’s experience, skills, and goals, helping highlight roles that may be a strong match.
Users can then follow links to apply directly through the original job sites. OpenAI has also improved ChatGPT’s ability to create resumes, edit existing resumes, and export them in a professional format.
These updates are being rolled out gradually to users around the world.
