Apple Music is reportedly preparing to introduce new transparency tags that will help identify music created or assisted by artificial intelligence.

According to a report from Music Business Worldwide, Apple informed record labels and distributors about the upcoming change through a newsletter sent on Wednesday. The update will allow industry partners to flag when AI tools are used in the creation of music uploaded to the platform.

The new system will expand the use of metadata, which typically includes details such as song title, artist name, album title and genre. Apple Music will now allow distributors to add special tags that indicate whether artificial intelligence was involved in different parts of a project.

These tags can specify whether AI was used in areas such as the song’s artwork, the music track itself, the composition or lyrics, or even the music video.

The goal of the change is to improve transparency so listeners can better understand how AI tools were used in creating certain songs or related content.

However, the system will rely on distributors and record labels to voluntarily apply these tags when uploading content. Because the tagging process is optional, some AI-generated music could still appear on the platform without being clearly labelled.

Apple’s approach is similar to the one being explored by Spotify, which is also relying on partners to disclose the use of AI tools in music production.
