Amazon is rolling out a new update for Alexa Plus that gives its AI assistant the ability to handle more complex smart home requests and work with a wider range of connected devices.
The feature is currently available as a preview and expands Alexa Plus beyond simple voice commands by allowing it to understand requests and automatically interact with compatible products.
The update adds support for devices from brands including Bosch, Delta, Ecovacs, iRobot, Yale Home, Whirlpool, Tapo, Eufy, and several others. Instead of requiring users to know specific commands, Alexa Plus can figure out which device is needed and carry out the task on its own.
Amazon demonstrated the feature with a smart washing machine. A user can simply say, “Alexa, my kid’s soccer jersey could use a deep clean, but the tag says cold wash only.” Alexa Plus will then identify the compatible washer, review its available wash programs, and automatically select the most suitable cycle without any additional input.
These new capabilities are powered by Amazon’s AI developer toolkit, which is designed to make it easier for manufacturers to integrate their products with Alexa Plus, including devices that previously supported only limited voice controls.
Amazon first introduced Alexa Plus earlier this year with support for multi-step conversations, routine creation through voice commands, and integrations with services such as Ticketmaster, OpenTable, Uber, Thumbtack, Expedia, Yelp, Square, and Angi. The latest update significantly expands what the assistant can do by bringing support for many more smart home products and online services.
The company is also adopting the open-source Model Context Protocol (MCP), a standard that allows AI assistants to securely connect with external apps and services. As a result, more companies will be able to build integrations for Alexa Plus. Brands including Canva, Headspace, Priceline, Lyft, Cengage, Virgin Atlantic, and Weekend are expected to add support later this year.
Amazon says these upcoming integrations will allow users to complete tasks directly through Alexa Plus. For example, Priceline customers will be able to search for hotels and book trips using voice commands, while Priceline, Atom Tickets, Cengage, Fandango, and Taskrabbit will also support payments through Amazon Wallet, making purchases even more seamless.
