Google is giving YouTube’s search experience a major AI-powered upgrade as part of its wider push to bring artificial intelligence across its products.

One of the biggest additions is “Ask YouTube,” a new feature designed to help users search in a more natural and detailed way instead of relying only on simple keywords.

With Ask YouTube, users can ask more complex questions, such as looking for tips on how to teach a child to ride a bike or finding creator reviews of cozy games to play before bedtime. The feature also supports follow-up questions, making it easier for users to refine their search and find exactly what they are looking for.

YouTube will use both Shorts and long-form videos to generate a helpful response based on the user’s query. For now, the feature is available to YouTube Premium subscribers in the U.S. on desktop through YouTube’s optional Premium experiments, where users can test upcoming tools before a wider rollout.

Alongside the search upgrade, YouTube also announced that it is bringing Gemini Omni, Google’s new AI video model, to YouTube Shorts Remix and the YouTube Create app. The company says the model will help users remix videos in a more creative and meaningful way by better understanding what they want to make.

According to YouTube, Gemini Omni can support more consistent storytelling while handling complex video and audio adjustments in the background. This could make it easier for creators to build on existing content and create new Shorts with less manual editing work.

AI-generated video tools have received mixed reactions across the industry, especially as companies like Meta and OpenAI have experimented with AI-driven short-form content. OpenAI even shut down its Sora social app, where users could share AI-generated clips. YouTube, however, appears to be introducing its AI tools more gradually and less aggressively.

YouTube is also expanding its likeness-detection tool to creators aged 18 and older. The feature is designed to help creators protect themselves from being deepfaked or misrepresented in AI-generated videos. If creators find content that uses their likeness without permission, they can request its removal. Since the tool is only now becoming more widely available, its real-world effectiveness will become clearer over time.
