Microsoft is preparing to make Windows 11 more connected with Android phones by allowing users to continue app activity from their phone directly on their PC.
This new feature is designed to help people switch between devices without losing progress, whether they are listening to music, working on documents, or browsing the web.
The company first introduced a basic version of a cross-device resume last year, which allowed Windows 11 users to continue OneDrive sessions started on Android phones. Now, Microsoft is expanding this idea further. With the latest update currently in the Release Preview stage, users will soon be able to resume Spotify playback, pick up unfinished Word, Excel, or PowerPoint work, and continue browsing sessions from their phone on their Windows 11 computer.
For example, if someone is listening to music on Spotify on their Android phone, Windows 11 will offer an option to continue the same playback on the PC without starting over. The same experience applies to Office documents, making it easier to move from mobile work to a larger screen. Browsing activity will also sync, allowing users to continue open tabs from their phone in Microsoft Edge on their PC.
This upcoming feature is similar to Apple’s Handoff experience on macOS, where users can move tasks between Apple devices smoothly. Microsoft originally announced its vision for cross device app resume at its Build developer conference last year. An older attempt in Windows 10, known as Project Rome, failed to gain widespread adoption, but this new version appears more polished and ready for everyday use.
Since the feature has now reached the Release Preview testing phase, it suggests that a public rollout is not far away. Alongside app resume support, the same update also brings improvements such as better MIDI 2.0 support, enhanced voice typing, stronger fingerprint security with Windows Hello, and expanded language support for Copilot Plus PCs. All signs point to Windows 11 becoming more tightly connected with Android devices in the near future.
