Meta has announced a new AI-powered feature for WhatsApp that can summarize unread messages in a chat, helping users quickly catch up on conversations.
The feature is powered by Meta AI and is currently rolling out in the U.S. with English language support, with plans to expand globally later this year.
The message summaries are visible only to the user, maintaining the app’s end-to-end encryption. Meta emphasized that the summaries use its Private Processing technology, meaning neither Meta nor WhatsApp can see the messages or the generated summaries. The summaries are optional and disabled by default.

A small icon will appear in chats where the feature is available. Users can manage the setting by navigating to Settings > Chats > Private Processing, where individual AI features can be turned on or off.
This update builds on Meta’s AI rollout in April, which introduced chat-based tools without compromising user privacy. The new technology now allows WhatsApp to privately access message context to generate summaries or assist with writing suggestions.
