WhatsApp has started rolling out one of its biggest privacy updates yet by allowing users to create unique usernames instead of sharing their phone numbers.

The new feature is designed to make it easier and safer for people to connect with new contacts while keeping their personal mobile numbers private.

The feature is being released gradually around the world, allowing users to reserve a unique username before the full rollout later this year. Once enabled, people can share their username with others, and new conversations can begin without revealing their phone number. Existing contacts who already have your number will continue to see it as usual.

According to WhatsApp, usernames are meant to improve privacy rather than act like social media profiles. There will be no public directory or searchable list of usernames. Instead, someone must know your exact username to contact you for the first time, reducing unwanted messages and spam.

Users can choose a unique username between 3 and 35 characters. WhatsApp will also reserve usernames for businesses, public figures, and government organizations to help prevent impersonation. If a preferred username is unavailable, the app will suggest alternatives.

To add another layer of protection, WhatsApp is introducing an optional Username Key. If enabled, someone will need both your exact username and this security key before they can send you a message for the first time. Users can reset the key whenever they want to block new unsolicited contacts.

The new privacy feature is optional, meaning users can continue using WhatsApp with their phone numbers if they prefer. However, for people who frequently chat with strangers, join community groups, or communicate with customers online, usernames offer a more private way to stay connected without exposing personal contact information.
