WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature that aims to make old-style voicemail feel unnecessary.

The platform now allows you to instantly send a voice or video message when someone doesn’t answer your call, making the process faster and more natural. Instead of navigating through chat menus to record a note, WhatsApp will automatically prompt you to leave a message right after the missed call, matching the format of the call — voice or video.

While WhatsApp still doesn’t offer a traditional voicemail system built directly into its calling interface, this new update works similarly. The recorded message appears immediately in the chat, so the person who missed the call can see or hear it as soon as they open WhatsApp. The company aims to make communication feel smoother without relying on outdated voicemail conventions.

The update also comes with a few extra improvements. Users will now be able to send reactions during voice chats, adding a more expressive way to communicate in audio conversations. Video calls are getting a small upgrade too, with WhatsApp automatically highlighting whoever is speaking.

And for those using WhatsApp’s AI tools, Meta has added support for Midjourney and Flux image generation models following new partnership deals earlier this year.
