WestJet, Canada’s second-largest airline, is investigating a cybersecurity incident that disrupted access to its internal systems and impacted the WestJet mobile app and website.
While guest-facing services have since been restored, some internal software and operational tools remain affected.
In an official security advisory, WestJet confirmed it is working with law enforcement and Transport Canada to contain the breach and minimize further disruption.
“We have activated specialized internal teams in cooperation with law enforcement and Transport Canada to investigate the matter and limit impacts,” the company stated.
The cyberattack temporarily blocked users from logging into the airline’s website and mobile app, although both services have been restored as of Saturday morning. The company emphasized that flight operations continue to run safely, but efforts are ongoing to safeguard sensitive guest and employee data.
WestJet has not disclosed whether the breach involved ransomware or whether systems were shut down preemptively to prevent further spread.
Cybersecurity experts and affected passengers await further details as WestJet works to determine the full scope and impact of the incident.
