The United States has confirmed for the first time that the Space Force has deployed weapons in orbit, revealing a new level of military preparedness as threats in space continue to evolve.
While discussing the need to respond faster to rapidly changing technologies and adversaries, Meink said the US is increasing its readiness for potential threats in space.
“We are increasing readiness against existing threats, and the United States has on-orbit space control weapons capable of defending the Joint Force against hostile adversary action,” Meink said.
Meink did not provide details about the number or specific capabilities of the weapons, but the statement marks the first public acknowledgment from the Department that the United States has space-control weapons already deployed in orbit.
The announcement came as Meink outlined a broader plan to rapidly modernize both the Air Force and Space Force. He said the military must increase combat power and innovate faster as artificial intelligence, autonomous systems and other technologies change the nature of warfare.
“In today’s rapidly changing threat environment, we cannot expect a world-class military if we choose not to invest in it,” Meink warned.
The Space Force is also expanding its use of proliferated satellite constellations. Meink highlighted the Space-Based Interceptor program, which he said moved from an initial contract to flight-ready hardware in less than a year. The department is also making progress on its Space Data Network and is beginning launches for an Air Moving Target Indication constellation.
The broader modernization effort extends beyond space. Meink said the Air Force plans to field at least 500 autonomous Collaborative Combat Aircraft by 2032, while a new class of affordable uncrewed aircraft known as Mass Modular Aircraft is expected to be deployed at scale.
The Air Force is also developing autonomous systems capable of operating alongside crewed aircraft, with Meink arguing that combining manned platforms with large numbers of autonomous systems could significantly increase combat power.
