The U.S. Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has confirmed that it was the target of a cybersecurity breach, believed to be carried out by a foreign hacker.
The incident may have exposed sensitive information from the agency’s internal network.
In a statement shared with BleepingComputer, CBO spokesperson Caitlin Emma said the agency detected the security issue and acted immediately to contain it. She added that new security controls and enhanced monitoring systems have been implemented to prevent future attacks. Emma assured that work for Congress is continuing as usual while the investigation is underway.
According to The Washington Post, officials discovered the breach in recent days and are now assessing whether emails and communications between congressional offices and CBO analysts were accessed. Although investigators believe the intrusion was detected early, some congressional offices have temporarily stopped emailing the CBO as a safety measure.
The CBO is a nonpartisan agency that provides Congress with economic analysis and budget estimates for proposed laws. A cyberattack on this office could risk exposing confidential economic forecasts, draft reports, and private discussions about upcoming legislation.
