US President Donald Trump has issued an executive order instructing the Department of Justice to hold off on enforcing a rule that requires TikTok to separate from its Chinese parent company, ByteDance.

The order, signed on Trump’s first day back in office, effectively extends the deadline for a sale, undercutting penalties on American companies like Apple and Google that work with TikTok.

The executive order directs the Attorney General to take no action to enforce the law for 75 days, giving Trump’s administration time to assess the situation. It also assures companies that there will be no penalties for any conduct during this period or before the order’s issuance. Despite this move, legal experts note that the executive order may not hold up in court against the bipartisan law passed in January, which mandates TikTok’s divestment from ByteDance.
