iPhone users in Germany can now use PayPal’s tap-to-pay feature at stores, thanks to a new update.
This means people can pay directly with PayPal at payment terminals that accept Mastercard, just by tapping their iPhone.
According to German tech site iPhone Ticker, this new feature is possible because of a rule in the EU’s Digital Markets Act, which forced Apple to open the iPhone’s NFC chip to other apps, not just Apple Pay.
Right now, PayPal’s tap-to-pay only works on iPhones, not on Apple Watches, and only on terminals that support Mastercard. Earlier, a Norwegian app called Vipps was the first to use this new access to Apple’s NFC system in Europe.
Apple has also started allowing more NFC features globally. In August, the company announced that developers in the US and other countries can build apps that use NFC payments. Businesses can also use iPhones to accept contactless payments through third-party apps like Venmo and PayPal Zettle, a feature that launched last year.
