US President Donald Trump has once again extended the deadline for TikTok to separate from its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, or face a ban in the United States.

This marks the third time Trump has delayed the enforcement of the law. The new deadline now falls in mid-September.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed on Tuesday that Trump will sign an executive order later this week, allowing another 90 days for the deal to go through. “We’ll use this time to work on finalizing the deal to ensure Americans can continue using TikTok safely and securely,” she said.

The extension gives TikTok’s U.S. service partners, such as Apple and Google, temporary protection under the law, specifically the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act. Without this extension, those companies could face massive fines for keeping the app online after the legal ban date.

However, critics argue that Trump’s extensions may not be legally valid, since the law passed by Congress — and upheld by the Supreme Court — doesn’t provide a way for the president to extend the deadline without a formal legal change. Lawmakers from both parties have raised concerns about the legality of these repeated delays.
