TikTok is reportedly working on a new version of its app specifically for U.S. users, according to The Information.
The new app is expected to launch on September 5, with the current version reportedly set to stop functioning by March of next year. However, the timeline could still change, the report notes. Once the transition begins, TikTok users in the U.S. will be required to download the new version to continue accessing the platform.
This development follows comments made by former President Donald Trump, who stated earlier this week that discussions with China about a possible deal would resume soon. He also indicated that the government had “pretty much” reached an agreement regarding TikTok’s U.S. operations.
The reported app overhaul comes after a series of extended deadlines for a potential TikTok ban in the U.S. In the latest move, Trump extended the deadline to September 17, marking the third such extension in the ongoing negotiations.
