Threads is testing a new feature that makes it quicker to start private conversations.
Meta announced that some users can now type “DM me” or “Message me” in a post or reply, and the app will automatically turn it into a clickable link that invites others to send them a direct message.
When someone taps the shortcut, it opens a one-on-one chat with that user. If both people follow each other, the message goes straight to the main inbox. If they do not follow each other, the message is sent to the Message Requests folder to help reduce spam.
Meta says this new shortcut removes the extra step of visiting someone’s profile just to start a conversation. Instead, users can begin chatting directly from a post or reply.

Threads was slower than some competitors to roll out native direct messaging. But this update shows the company wants to make messaging a bigger part of the platform by cutting down the number of steps needed to connect.
The feature is currently being tested with select users in the United States and Canada. Like many test features, it is not clear when or if it will become available to everyone
