Telegram is currently under scrutiny by the European Union for its reported user numbers. According to the Financial Times, the investigation was triggered after Telegram failed to provide an updated user count this month.
The EU is particularly interested in whether Telegram exceeds the 45 million monthly user threshold, which would classify it as a “huge online platform” under the Digital Services Act (DSA). This designation carries specific regulatory obligations.
In February, Telegram reported having 41 million monthly users within the EU, but the current figures remain undisclosed.
