Spotify is reportedly working on a new feature called Page Match that lets audiobook listeners continue exactly where they left off in their physical or ebook.
According to Android Authority, code found in Spotify app version 9.1.18.282 shows references to a “Page Match beta” feature that can sync audiobooks with paper and ebook versions of the same title.
The feature works by using your phone’s camera to scan the page you are currently reading. Spotify then uses optical character recognition (OCR) to identify the text and match it with the correct timestamp in the audiobook. To use Page Match, users will need to own the physical or ebook version and also unlock or buy the audiobook on Spotify.
Page Match may also work the other way around. Code suggests Spotify will show the page number that matches your current audiobook position, making it easy to switch between listening and reading. However, page numbers can change depending on the book edition, which could make perfect matching difficult in some cases.
Spotify has not officially announced Page Match yet, so it may never launch publicly. OCR is also not always accurate, and users may need to scan nearby pages if matching fails. Amazon already offers a similar feature called Whispersync for Voice for Kindle and Audible, but Spotify’s version could support physical books too—making it easier to switch between reading and listening while driving, cooking, or doing daily tasks.
