Spotify is preparing to bring music videos to users in the United States and Canada, expanding a feature that first appeared in beta across several countries last year.

A spokesperson told Variety that the company is planning to introduce the feature in the coming weeks. Listeners will be able to switch from audio to video with one tap. However, it is still not known whether the feature will be open to everyone or only to Premium subscribers, as it was during the international beta launch.

This update arrives shortly after Spotify reached a new audiovisual licensing agreement with the National Music Publishers Association. The deal opened an opt-in portal for NMPA members to sign expanded audiovisual licenses in the United States. Spotify already has similar agreements with major music companies, including Universal, Warner, and Sony.

Music videos first appeared on Spotify in March 2024 during a beta rollout in twelve countries such as the United Kingdom, Germany and Italy. The launch included a small selection of videos from artists like Ed Sheeran, Doja Cat and Ice Spice. The company expanded the feature to eighty-five more regions in October 2024, adding visuals from Charli xcx, Fontaines D C, Lisa and other popular artists.

This is not Spotify’s first attempt to add video content. As far back as 2015, the company partnered with Comedy Central and ESPN to bring short clips and later began pushing deeper into podcasts. Video podcasts have grown quickly.

Spotify introduced its first group of vodcasts in July 2020 and released uninterrupted video podcast features last November. According to the company, the number of creators uploading video each month increased by fifty percent year over year. The new music video feature now places Spotify in more direct competition with YouTube Music, which has long offered a similar audio and video toggle.
