A hacking group known as ShinyHunters has claimed that it has stolen data belonging to premium users of Pornhub and is threatening to release it unless a ransom is paid.
The group claimed on Tuesday and said it is demanding payment in Bitcoin to prevent the data from being published and to delete the files.
Reuters reported that it could not immediately confirm the full size or scope of the breach, but the hackers shared a sample of the data, parts of which were verified. At least three former Pornhub premium users, two based in Canada and one in the United States, confirmed that the information linked to them was real. They said the data appeared to be several years old and asked to remain anonymous due to the sensitive nature of the situation.
ShinyHunters told Reuters in an online chat that the stolen data belonged to users of Pornhub’s premium service, which offers features such as high-definition videos, ad-free viewing, and virtual reality content. The group shared data it claimed came from 14 premium users.
Reuters was able to match details of six people from the leaked sample with information that had appeared in earlier data breaches and was preserved by a dark web intelligence firm. Three of those individuals confirmed they had previously subscribed to Pornhub’s premium service.
