Samsung has announced the world’s first Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 5.0 solution, setting a new benchmark for mobile storage performance with data transfer speeds of up to 10.8GB/s.

The new storage technology is designed to support the growing demands of on-device artificial intelligence, enabling faster processing, lower latency, and improved responsiveness for AI-powered smartphones and other connected devices.

As AI workloads increasingly move from the cloud to devices, storage has become a critical component of the user experience. Samsung said its new UFS 5.0 technology will help accelerate the performance of large language models and other AI applications running directly on smartphones, tablets, wearables, and extended reality (XR) devices.

Built on the latest JEDEC embedded memory interface standard, Samsung’s UFS 5.0 delivers sequential read speeds of up to 10.8GB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 9.5GB/s. According to the company, these speeds are more than twice as fast as those offered by the previous UFS 4.1 generation, allowing significantly faster storage and processing of large amounts of data.

Samsung has also improved power efficiency by more than 40% compared to its UFS 4.1 solution. The gains come from technologies such as clock gating and multi-voltage operation, which reduce the amount of energy required for data transfers. The improvements are expected to help extend battery life in future mobile devices while supporting increasingly demanding AI workloads.

The company has further reduced the physical size of the storage package to just 7.5mm x 13mm x 0.9mm, making it 16.7% smaller than its predecessor. The compact design provides manufacturers with greater flexibility when developing slimmer smartphones, wearables, and XR products.

Samsung plans to begin mass production of UFS 5.0 in the fourth quarter of this year, with storage capacities reaching up to 1TB.
