Roblox has announced a new AI-powered feature that automatically rephrases inappropriate language in chat messages instead of simply blocking it.
The company says the system will help keep conversations clear while still enforcing community guidelines.
Until now, Roblox used a basic text filter that replaced banned words or phrases with the “#” symbol. While this helped moderate conversations, it often left messages filled with strings like “####,” making chats confusing and difficult to understand.
The new system takes a different approach. Instead of hiding the message, it rewrites the sentence into more respectful language that stays close to the user’s original meaning.
For example, a message like “Hurry TF up!” would previously appear as “####.” With the new system, it will instead be rewritten as “Hurry up!” Roblox says everyone in the chat will be notified that the message has been rephrased to maintain a respectful conversation.
Roblox says chat is a key part of how players interact and coordinate inside games on the platform. Rajiv Bhatia, vice president of User and Discovery Product at Roblox, said the new feature is designed to keep conversations flowing while encouraging more appropriate language.
According to Bhatia, real-time rephrasing helps reduce friction in chat while still maintaining the standards that keep the Roblox community safe and civil.
The company also confirmed that its existing safety systems will still apply in more serious cases of abusive behavior. Rephrasing is meant to reduce minor disruptions in conversation, not replace moderation tools.
The feature works across all languages currently supported by Roblox’s automatic translation system.
Roblox is also upgrading its text-filtering technology to better detect attempts to bypass moderation. The company says the system is becoming more effective at spotting variations of banned language, including leetspeak and other creative spellings used to avoid filters.
Early results suggest the improvements are working. Roblox reports that the system has reduced false negatives related to users sharing or requesting personal information by 20 times.
The announcement comes shortly after Roblox introduced mandatory facial verification for access to certain chat features. The company implemented the change following a series of lawsuits filed by attorneys general in states such as Texas, Kentucky, and Louisiana.
