On Wednesday afternoon, Reddit experienced a significant outage, leaving many users unable to access the platform.
The issue stemmed from a bug introduced in a recent update, as Reddit spokesperson Tim Rathschmidt confirmed in a statement to The Verge. “There was a bug in a recent update we made, but a fix is in place and we’re ramping back up,” Rathschmidt explained.
During the outage, the platform was largely inaccessible. The website displayed a cryptic error message: “upstream connect error or disconnect/reset before headers. reset reason: connection failure.” On the mobile app, users encountered another frustrating message: “We have encountered an error. Please try again later.” The problem began around 3:20 PM ET, as reflected by a surge in reports on Downdetector.
Reddit addressed the issue by implementing a fix at approximately 7:30 PM ET. While the platform’s status page now indicates progress, stating that the team is “monitoring the results” of the fix, some users may still experience degraded performance on both the website and the mobile app.
