A Latvian hacker linked to a major Russia-based ransomware gang has been sentenced to 102 months in prison after helping orchestrate attacks on more than 54 companies worldwide.

The U.S. Justice Department said Deniss Zolotarjovs played a key role in extorting victims and escalating pressure tactics, including the use of highly sensitive stolen data.

Authorities revealed that Zolotarjovs was part of a cybercriminal network associated with well-known ransomware brands like Conti, Royal, and Akira. Between June 2021 and August 2023, the group carried out widespread attacks, stealing corporate and personal data to demand ransom payments. In several cases, victims faced severe consequences, including system shutdowns and exposure of confidential information.

One of the most alarming incidents involved a pediatric healthcare provider, where stolen children’s health data was used as leverage. When ransom demands were not met, the group reportedly threatened to leak or sell the information, even distributing sensitive data to hundreds of patients to increase fear and pressure.

Financial damage from these attacks has been significant. Investigators estimate losses from just 13 companies exceeded $56 million, with millions paid directly in ransom. However, the actual impact could be far higher due to underreported cases, potentially reaching hundreds of millions of dollars.

Zolotarjovs was arrested in Georgia in December 2023 and later extradited to the United States. He pleaded guilty in July 2025 to charges including money laundering and wire fraud conspiracy. U.S. officials emphasized that this case highlights their ability to track and prosecute cybercriminals globally, even those operating across borders.
