Police in Illinois have charged a driver who allegedly struck and killed a pedestrian while livestreaming on TikTok.

According to local authorities, Tynesha McCarty-Wroten, who posts on TikTok under the name Tea Tyme, has been charged by the Zion Police Department with two felony counts: reckless homicide and aggravated use of a communications device resulting in death.

The New York Times reports that a video of the incident, which has been widely reshared on TikTok, appears to show McCarty-Wroten talking to her phone moments before a loud impact is heard. In the clip, a child off-camera asks, “What was that?” to which the woman responds, “I hit somebody.”

Investigators say surveillance footage shows McCarty-Wroten’s vehicle entering an intersection while the traffic light was still red. Police allege that she did not slow down or attempt to avoid the pedestrian, Darren Lucas, who was later taken to a hospital and pronounced dead.

McCarty-Wroten’s attorney told the New York Times that the incident was an accident, describing it as a negligent act rather than an intentional or reckless one.
