U.S. artificial intelligence company OpenAI said on Saturday that it has signed a deal with the government of Malta to provide all residents with access to its ChatGPT Plus service for one year after they complete a course on how to use AI.
The programme is set to begin in May and is expected to expand as more Maltese residents complete the free course. It will also be available to Maltese citizens living abroad.
Maltese Economy Minister Silvio Schembri said the initiative is aimed at turning AI from an unfamiliar idea into practical support for families, students, and workers, according to an OpenAI statement.
Malta has become the first country to launch a programme of this kind. OpenAI did not reveal the financial details of the deal.
