OpenAI has temporarily lifted the five-hour usage limit for GPT-5.6 Sol after a sharp increase in demand for its most powerful AI model over the past two days.
The company confirmed on Sunday that the temporary change applies to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Business subscribers. OpenAI has also reset current usage for all eligible users, giving them a fresh allowance to continue using the model without waiting for their previous limits to expire.
Morning. The last 48 hours of Codex and ChatGPT Work have been intense! Three important updates:
— Tibo (@thsottiaux) July 12, 2026
– Temporarily removing the 5 hour usage limit restriction for all Plus, Business and Pro plans
– Rolling out changes that will make GPT 5.6 Sol more efficient across the board and…
OpenAI product lead Tibo announced the update on X, saying the past 48 hours had been extremely busy following the launch of Codex and ChatGPT Work. Because both services share the same usage pool, many users quickly reached their limits while switching between local chats and cloud-based tasks.
Under the normal system, ChatGPT tracks usage within a rolling five-hour window, and some plans also include weekly usage limits depending on the selected model. With the temporary removal of the five-hour restriction, users can continue working without being interrupted as soon as they reach that short-term cap.
OpenAI also revealed that it is improving GPT-5.6 Sol to make it more efficient. According to Tibo, the changes will reduce how much of a user’s available usage is consumed during conversations, allowing people to accomplish more before reaching their limits.
