OpenAI is preparing to launch its AI-powered web browser in the coming weeks, according to a report by Reuters.
The browser is expected to feature a native ChatGPT interface, letting users interact with the chatbot directly without visiting OpenAI’s website.
Sources say the browser could also integrate Operator, OpenAI’s advanced AI agent capable of booking reservations, filling out forms, and handling other tasks, moving toward a more agentic future where AI can act autonomously on a user’s behalf.
The upcoming browser will reportedly be built on Google’s open-source Chromium engine, the same foundation used by Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Opera. This puts OpenAI in direct competition with traditional browser giants, especially as Google faces regulatory pressure that may lead to the sale of Chrome.
The news follows the recent launch of Perplexity’s AI browser, called Comet, which also uses Chromium and is available to subscribers at $200 per month. OpenAI’s offering could shake up the browser landscape further, especially as both companies have expressed interest in acquiring Chrome if it goes up for sale.
This development marks a logical next step for OpenAI, which has been gradually integrating web search into ChatGPT and expanding its reach across AI-powered tools.
