OpenAI has launched a new macOS app for Codex, marking a major upgrade to its AI-powered coding tools as competition heats up in agent-based software development.

The new Codex app is designed to support agentic workflows, allowing multiple AI agents to work in parallel on coding tasks. It integrates advanced agent skills and modern development practices that have gained popularity over the past year, particularly among developers using tools like Claude Code and Cowork.

The release comes less than two months after OpenAI introduced GPT-5.2-Codex, its most powerful coding model so far. According to the company, the macOS app makes the model easier to use by pairing it with a more flexible and interactive interface. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the strength of GPT-5.2 is most visible on complex projects, but admitted usability had been a challenge until now.

While GPT-5.2 currently leads TerminalBench, a benchmark focused on command-line programming tasks, rival models from Google’s Gemini 3 and Anthropic’s Claude Opus have posted similar scores within the margin of error. Results from SWE-bench, which measures how well AI fixes real-world software bugs, also show no clear winner. Experts note that agent-based coding remains difficult to benchmark accurately, with real-world performance often varying by workflow.

OpenAI says the Codex app adds practical features aimed at closing the gap with competitors. Developers can set automations to run in the background on a schedule and review results later, and they can choose different agent personalities, such as pragmatic or empathetic, depending on how they prefer to work.

Altman emphasized that the biggest advantage of AI-powered coding is speed. He said developers can now go from a blank project to a sophisticated piece of software in just a few hours, with progress limited mainly by how fast ideas can be typed. With the Codex macOS app, OpenAI is positioning itself as a serious contender in the rapidly growing space of agent-driven software development.
