Mozilla is taking a different approach from most browser makers by giving users direct control over artificial intelligence features in Firefox.

Starting February 24, a new update will introduce an “AI control” option in Firefox’s settings, allowing users to turn AI features on or off individually, or disable them entirely.

The new control panel will cover all of Firefox’s AI-powered tools, including access to a built-in AI chatbot, translation features, AI-generated tab group suggestions, and other experimental tools. Users will also be able to manage whether Firefox uses AI to generate alt text for images in PDFs or create AI-generated summaries in link previews.

Over the past year, Mozilla has expanded its use of AI, following similar moves by Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. Firefox introduced features like “shake to summarize” on iPhone, which lets users shake their phone to get an AI-generated summary of a webpage. The company is also working on an opt-in “AI Window,” designed to help users browse and search the web with assistance from an AI chatbot.

However, not all users welcomed this shift. In response to criticism, Mozilla CEO Anthony Enzor-DeMeo said in December that the company would add an AI “kill switch.” He emphasized that user choice is essential to maintaining trust. The upcoming AI control fulfills that promise by letting users disable all current and future AI features if they choose.

Mozilla says the decision reflects mixed feedback from its community. Some users want nothing to do with AI, while others want tools that genuinely improve their browsing experience. By offering granular controls instead of forcing AI features on everyone, Mozilla hopes to balance innovation with user trust.
