OpenAI is now rolling out a new feature called Codex for ChatGPT, aimed at helping software developers automate their coding tasks. It’s designed to boost productivity, not replace programmers.
OpenAI says Codex works as an AI coding assistant that can take on jobs like writing new code, proposing pull requests, and even running tasks in a safe environment. It’s especially useful for delegating small programming tasks, which usually take between 1 to 30 minutes.
Codex is built on a newer version of ChatGPT called Codex-1, which is optimized for writing code with better accuracy. It pulls from GitHub codebases and follows the usual coding styles used in real projects.
Once Codex finishes a task, it automatically saves the changes and shows proof of what it did using terminal logs and test results. This helps developers understand and trust the steps Codex took.
Right now, Codex is only available to ChatGPT Pro users, and the subscription costs $200 per month.
