OpenAI has finally brought ChatGPT to Linux desktops with the launch of an official ChatGPT app for the platform.

The release comes after years of requests from Linux users, particularly developers and members of the open-source community who wanted a dedicated desktop experience.

OpenAI announced the Linux app this week, saying Linux has been one of the most requested platforms for its desktop app. The company said the launch brings ChatGPT and Codex to all major desktop operating systems.

The new Linux application is currently available as a preview and gives users access to ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex directly from their desktop. OpenAI is making the app available worldwide.

The company says the app supports desktop versions of Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44. Linux has hundreds of distributions, but many other distributions are based on these major platforms, meaning users of compatible downstream distributions may also be able to run the application.

The Linux release fills a notable gap in OpenAI’s desktop lineup. ChatGPT has already been available on Windows and macOS, while Linux users have largely relied on the web version or unofficial solutions to access the service from their desktops.

OpenAI is not the first major AI company to bring its desktop application to Linux. Anthropic launched a Linux version of its Claude desktop app about a month earlier. Claude’s Linux application supports Ubuntu 22.04 and newer versions as well as Debian 12 and later.
