OpenAI is reportedly planning to charge advertisers a premium price to run ads on ChatGPT, signaling that advertising inside AI chatbots could be far more expensive than on traditional social media platforms.
According to The Information, OpenAI is considering ad rates of around $60 per 1,000 views, which is roughly three times higher than what advertisers typically pay on Meta’s platforms like Facebook and Instagram.
Despite the high pricing, advertisers will initially receive limited performance data. Unlike Google or Meta ads, which provide detailed insights such as conversions or purchases, early ChatGPT advertisers will only see high-level metrics like total ad views or total clicks.
OpenAI may expand analytics options in the future, but the company has made strong privacy commitments. When announcing ads earlier this month, OpenAI said it will never sell user data to advertisers and will keep ChatGPT conversations private. This means ads will not rely on the kind of personal tracking commonly used in online advertising.
The first ads on ChatGPT are expected to roll out in the coming weeks and will appear for users on free and lower-tier Go plans. Ads will not be shown to users under the age of 18, and they will be excluded from chats involving sensitive topics such as mental health or politics.
