OpenAI has introduced Images 2.6, an updated image-generation model that brings faster creation, more precise editing and native animated GIF support to ChatGPT and Codex.
The release also introduces new API models designed for developers who need greater control over image generation and editing workflows.
Announced on November 4, Images 2.6 generates images up to 50% faster than the previous generation. OpenAI says the update also improves visual consistency, helping preserve the appearance of characters, products and brand elements across multiple editing rounds.
One of the biggest additions is the ability to create animated GIFs directly from text prompts or uploaded images. Users can animate characters, create reaction images and develop simple storyboards. They can also adjust playback speed and edit individual frames to refine the animation.

The new model is designed to make professional image creation more accessible. Improvements to layout quality help produce polished posters, product images and other visual materials, while more consistent editing allows users to make targeted changes without rebuilding an entire image.
OpenAI is also expanding its image-generation API with two models: GPT-Image-2.6 Flare and GPT-Image-2.6 Sunburst. Flare is optimized for speed and interactive editing, while Sunburst focuses on higher-quality output and greater consistency for detailed creative work.
Developers gain additional controls, including markup-guided editing, SVG output and a complexity parameter that adjusts how much planning the model applies to a request. These features can help teams integrate image creation into design tools, applications and automated content workflows.
Images 2.6 is available globally across ChatGPT and Codex on the web, desktop and mobile, including all subscription tiers. The Flare and Sunburst models are also available through OpenAI’s API.
OpenAI says users now generate more than four billion images per week across ChatGPT, Codex and its API, highlighting the growing role of AI-generated visuals in everyday creative work
