OpenAI has finally cleared up confusion around its different ChatGPT models by posting a new article titled “ChatGPT Enterprise – Models & Limits” on May 3.
Although meant for business users, the guide is also useful for regular ChatGPT users.
Currently, ChatGPT offers five main models: GPT-4o, GPT-4.5, o3, o4-mini, and o4-mini-high. But many users are unsure which one to use and when.
GPT-4o vs GPT-4.5: What’s the Difference?
- GPT-4o is called the “omni model.” It’s designed for real-time tasks like summarizing, writing emails, or brainstorming. It supports most features, including image generation, audio tools, data analysis, and custom GPTs.
- GPT-4.5, on the other hand, is better at creative and emotional tasks, like writing more naturally and thinking creatively. If you want a model with stronger communication skills, GPT-4.5 is the better pick.
o3, o4-mini, and o4-mini-high: Which One Should You Use?
- o4-mini is fast and good for basic technical tasks like coding or STEM-related questions.
- o4-mini-high is more accurate and better at advanced tasks, such as complex math or detailed programming.
- o3 is best for complex, multi-step work like long-term planning, in-depth analysis, or difficult science problems.
To access these models, users need to subscribe to ChatGPT Plus for $20/month.
