Nvidia has introduced a new chip designed to bring AI capabilities directly to laptops and desktop computers, putting the company in closer competition with AMD, Intel, and Apple in the fast-growing AI PC market.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, who is in Taiwan for the Computex conference, said on Monday that the RTX Spark PC chip is part of Nvidia’s broader effort with Microsoft to “reinvent the PC” for the AI era. He said the chip comes after three years of collaboration between the two companies.
The RTX Spark chip is built to run AI agents locally on personal computers, instead of relying only on cloud-based computing. Industry experts say this could change how people interact with AI on everyday devices.
Huang said Nvidia developed the RTX Spark chip with support from Taiwan’s MediaTek. Neil Shah, co-founder of Counterpoint Research, said the chip could help transform traditional app-based PCs into agentic AI personal computers. He said such devices could eventually become common in homes as private edge AI agents become more important.
Shah described it as a potential “RTX Spark” moment for personal computing, comparing its impact to major technology shifts brought by the iPhone, ChatGPT, and DeepSeek.
The launch of the RTX Spark chip, along with Nvidia’s Vera central processing unit, shows the company’s growing focus on PC and CPU products. During his keynote address, Huang spent much of his time highlighting the new RTX Spark chip and the Vera CPU.
The Vera CPU is designed for AI agents, and Huang said early adopters include OpenAI, Anthropic, and SpaceX. The Nvidia chief appeared on stage in his well-known black leather jacket as he discussed the company’s latest push into AI-powered personal computing.
Following the announcement, shares of AMD and Intel fell nearly 4% in pre-market U.S. trading, while Qualcomm dropped almost 7% and Apple slipped 0.6%. Microsoft rose 3.1%, helped also by a rebound in software stocks.
