NVIDIA has introduced a new open-source artificial intelligence platform aimed at helping governments and businesses build their own advanced weather forecasting systems using AI and complex climate data.

The platform, called Earth-2, includes two AI-based weather models designed to deliver more accurate two-week forecasts and short-term “nowcasts.” These nowcasts can predict where storms or severe weather events may strike up to six hours in advance, according to Nvidia.

Earth-2 also features a new data assimilation model that rapidly computes critical atmospheric conditions, including temperature, wind speed, and air pressure. These factors, known as “initial conditions,” are essential for launching precise and customized weather forecasts.

NVIDIA, currently the world’s most valuable publicly traded company, said the goal is to remove major barriers preventing wider AI adoption across industries. The company’s chips and computing systems already power much of the global AI infrastructure boom, and weather modeling is a natural fit due to its extreme computing demands.

Artificial intelligence is increasingly transforming weather prediction by replacing traditional supercomputer-based models. Instead of simulating the planet’s complex physics, AI models analyze vast historical and real-time datasets to identify patterns. Studies have shown that these AI-driven approaches can outperform conventional forecasting methods in both speed and accuracy.

Industries highly sensitive to weather conditions, including energy trading, shipping, insurance, and agriculture, have been early adopters of AI forecasting tools. These sectors rely on precise predictions of temperature changes, wind speeds, storm paths, and solar energy output to reduce risk and gain a competitive advantage.

NVIDIA is not alone in this space. Major players like Google, Microsoft, and Huawei are also investing heavily in AI-powered climate and weather technologies. NVIDIA says its Earth-2 models can rival systems developed by government meteorological agencies and Google’s DeepMind.

A key advantage of Earth-2 is independence. NVIDIA said governments and companies can generate forecasts without relying on external providers, giving them full control over their data. Because the software is open-source, it can be freely modified, copied, or improved by developers worldwide.
