Norway’s intelligence chief has accused Russian hackers of taking control of a dam in western Norway earlier this year.
The attack, which happened in April, briefly opened one of the dam’s floodgates and released water at about 500 liters per second for four hours before officials stopped it.
The dam, located in Bremanger, mainly regulates water for a fish farm, so the incident did not cause major damage. However, authorities say it shows how vulnerable critical infrastructure can be to cyberattacks.
Beate Gangås, head of Norway’s Police Security Service, said the attack was likely meant to create fear and chaos rather than cause physical harm. A pro-Russian hacker group is believed to be behind the breach, and investigators say the hackers even posted a video of the dam’s control panel on Telegram.
This is the first time Norway has publicly blamed Russian hackers for targeting its infrastructure. The Russian embassy in Oslo has dismissed the claims, calling them unfounded and politically motivated.
