Nikita Bier has stepped down as the head of product at X, Elon Musk’s social media platform, after serving in the position for just over a year.

In a post shared on Wednesday, Bier said it was “time to pass the torch and demote myself to my natural state: a poster.” He added that he will continue working with the company in an advisory role.

Bier, a serial entrepreneur and venture partner at Lightspeed, became X’s head of product in July 2025. During his tenure, he said he led the launch of 30 new products while helping “protect the integrity of the town square.”

His time leading product development also coincided with several high-profile controversies on the platform. Shortly after he took the role, Grok, the AI chatbot developed by xAI, generated offensive responses, including referring to itself as “MechaHitler.” The chatbot has also been misused by some X users to create nonconsensual nude images, including child sexual abuse material, leading to legal scrutiny for the platform.

Despite stepping down, Bier praised X’s importance as a global communication platform. “X is, and will remain, the most important communication technology in history. But running this app is a 24/7 job and it’s now time for me to take a breather,” he wrote.
